Mean Girls Essay - English

Mean Girls
Main character: Cady Heron Supporting character: Janis Ian, Regina George, Gretchen Wieners, Karen Smith and Damian

Cady (Lindsay Lohan) grew up in Africa where she also was homeschooled by her American parents. At the age of 16, her family moves back to the US and she has to start in High School for the first time in her life. To begin with it’s hard for Cady to fit in and therefore she starts to hang out with Janis and Damian. These two are probably the only two at school who accept when people are different. Janis and Damian help her through the first few days; tell her about the school and suddenly all focus is on the three girls of the school, Regina, Gretchen and Karen. Janis calls them “The Plastics” and shows lot of hate to these girls. When Regina (leader of The Plastics) asks Cady if she want to join their table at lunch, Janis sees her change to make evil plans against them. She wants Cady to work as her spy so she can destroy the group, but evil books, boyfriends, secrets and drama comes up to the surface and make Mean Girls to another typical American movie.

About Cady...
On the outside Cady is one of those really pretty girls. Long, red hair, freckles and a pretty smile. To begin with, most of the school finds her a bit of a weirdo but then everything starts to change when she becomes one of “The Plastics”. In the story you don’t hear much about her parents and their opinion but as all her changes goes on and on and she becomes more and more plastic, they start to worry. In the beginning they were afraid if she wouldn’t fit in but now it has all gone too far.

About Janis and Damian...
They are the best friends in the world. Their relationship is really close and if it wasn’t because of Damian being gay you would think that they would hook up in the end. Nothing can get in between their strong friendship. Though they are helping Cady, Damian is fully truly to Janis and vice versa. When Janis gets pissed at Cady for being a too real plastic Damian stands by her side. It was Janis’ plan to make Cady a plastic – but just for spying! Cady gets sucked into this evil circle of aimlessness where she tries her hardest to get Regina and the others trust. Janis and Damian leave the brainwashed Cady. When she wants to make it up to the school again and apologize, Janis and Damian are of course there to help.

About the gay character...
In Mean Girls there appears a gay character that in many ways seems a bit overrated. Through the story, Damian appears as this loyal friend and has a hilarious character. He is therefore an important person in the movie because he refills it with energy in his scenes. In fact, I think that you could built any straight-character with the same values, but still it would have required a little more to send out the message. As a gay character, Damian gets a lot of opportunities in his behaviours,

About “The Plastics”...
This is a slang invented by Janis and is used for the little group with the members: Regina, Gretchen and Karen. Janis thinks they look like pure plastic, with their perfect hair, all their make-up, skirts and Barbie-style. Once, Janis was a part of The Plastics – she was even Regina’s best friend, but all this changed when Regina noticed how upset Janis got when she didn’t answered her calls and so she made up this conclusion that she was a lesbian. The rumour was spread all over the school and is a main factor in explaining why Janis hates them so much.
Regina George is the leader of the group, just as blonde as her mother and rich. She is the brain behind the mean book where The Plastics write all their evil gossip about other students and teachers.
Karen Smith is another rich, blonde girl. In the story she’s known for being really dumb. She also claims that she can predict the weather by touching her breast. It’s not fully explained in the movie whether this is false or true.
Gretchen Wieners is another rich but dark haired girl. She considers herself as Regina’s best friend and is therefore an easy target for Cady, since Regina shows more interest in her than Gretchen.

About how to destroy Regina (‘The Plastics’)...- Aaron Samuels is on/off dating Regina. When Cady starts in High School they’ve just broke up and is closed area for Cady! As Gretchen says: “Ex-boyfriends are just so off limits to friends!”
- “Hot” body. To look good is a very important thing for Regina therefore Cady starts to feed her with some snack-bars which make get fatter.
- “Army of skanks”
Quote: “We gotta crack Gretchen. Once we crack Gretchen, we crack the lock on Regina’s whole dirty story.”

About the genre...
Mean Girls is a movie that is broadly appealing to a teenage audience. It also has a lot of School picture in it, because it is set and revolved about teenagers at an American High School. The representations of these films are often stereotypes of the characters which have been made clearly in Mean Girls. Here they put the students into different labels. You meet the cheerleaders, the jocks, Asian nerds and so on. Therefore I would describe the film as a Teen Comedy/Romance.

About the moral...
Since the audience is the youth this movie is trying to reach out and touch our feelings in our own level. It shows how evil we can behave towards each other and in the end where the principal convene to a meeting in the gym hall he points out the moral very clearly: “I don’t know who wrote this book, but you all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores!”
